چکیده

Animals incorporate local δ 2 H values from available water and dietary sources during tissue synthesis, which can provide evidence of elevational movements if multiple tissues with different turnover times are examined. Here we test the applicability of using δ 2 H as an indicator of altitudinal movements by examining multiple tissues (δ 2 Hbw (body water), δ 2 Hfeather, δ 2 Hfur, and δ 2 Hclaw) in birds and mammals in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Additionally, we measured δ 2 Hsw (stem water) and insect δ 2 Hbw and δ 2 Hwb (whole body) values to assess changes with elevation. We sampled 15 species of birds and two small mammal species along with potential food sources (three plant families and four insect groups) over an ~1200 m elevational gradient. δ 2 Hsw and δ 2 Hbw of plants, birds, and mammals decreased with increasing elevation. δ 2 Hfur, δ 2 Hfeather, δ 2 Hclaw, and δ 2 Hbw of insects did not show any discernable pattern with increasing elevation. Only one animal species, the least chipmunk (Tamias minimus), showed significant decreases in δ 2 H values with increasing elevation. Additionally, δ 2 H feather differed based on foraging guild. Other contributing factors such as diet, physiology, ecology, and within site variation may all contribute wide variation in values observed at a specific elevation. Given the amount of variability in each tissue type sampled in this study, we conclude that the use

The existence of a unimodal or monotonic pattern in species richness and diversity along an elevational gradient: a case study in Heydari Wildlife Refuge, NE Iran

This article presents an analysis of plant species richness and diversity, concerning some climatic variables along a 1500-m elevation gradient on the Binalood Mountain in Heydari Wildlife Refuge (HWR), northeastern Iran.  Two hundred and thirteen nested-sampling quadrats were established and the abundance of the plants was recorded. Vegetation sampling was carried out from 2014 till 2016, foll...

Elevational Distribution and Ecology of Small Mammals on Tanzania's Second Highest Mountain

Mt. Meru is Tanzania's second highest mountain and the ninth highest in Africa. The distribution and abundance of small mammals on this massif are poorly known. Here we document the distribution of shrews and rodents along an elevational gradient on the southeastern versant of Mt. Meru. Five sites were sampled with elevational center points of 1950, 2300, 2650, 3000, and 3600 m, using a systema...

VARIATION IN LEAF MORPHOLOGY OF PARROTIA PERSICA ALONG AN ELEVATIONAL GRADIENT IN EASTERN MAZANDARAN PROVINCE (N. IRAN)

In order to investigate the variation within and among populations of Parrotia persica C.A. Meyer based on leaf morphological traits, three populations were selected from Behshar area, in the east of Mazandaran Province. The populations selected along a transect in different altitudes of 182, 340, 540 meter above the sea level, respectively. In each population, 10 trees were selected and some l...

Variation in seed dispersal along an elevational gradient in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Seed dispersal by ants is ecologically important and geographically widespread as 20–50% of all herbaceous species in eastern deciduous forests are dispersed by ants, but we know little about how or why such interactions vary geographically. In this paper, we examined variation in seed dispersal by ants along an extensive elevational gradient (256–2025 m) in the Great Smoky Mountains National P...

Elevational Distribution and Ecology of Small Mammals on Africa’s Highest Mountain

Mt Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain, and an icon for a country famous for its mammalian fauna. The distribution and abundance of small mammals on the mountain are poorly known. Here we document the distribution of shrews and rodents along an elevational gradient on the southeastern versant of Kilimanjaro. Five sites were sampled with elevational center points of 2000, 2500, 3000, 3500 a...
